3 Day Lab: Episodic

JAY DUPLASS - ACTOR: TRANSPARENT (CRITIC'S CHOICE AWARD NOMINEE FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR), Writer/Director: Togetherness, Cyrus, The Puffy Chair, Jeff who lives at home

"We work with [Consulting Producer] Joan Scheckel, and one of the ways that she gets into [our family's backstories] — without coming at us with a bunch of “intellectual” ideas — is by putting us in a room together for two days. We have these random physical and emotional interactions, and weirdly, what we get done in those two days feels like more than if Jill [Soloway, the show’s creator] had written a novel about us. Joan is the glue of the show.

What is it?

Joan Scheckel, Consulting Producer (S1-S3) on Transparent, introduces a brand new 3 Day weekend intensive lab: Episodics. Learn the secrets to creating masterful Episodic structures using The Technique™ behind the Emmy Award Winning Transparent. Discover how to structure your story over ten or more episodes and create a compelling, authentic series!

The Episodic Lab unpacks the essential connection between meaning, action, character, relationship and plot. This weekend intensive will teach you how to:
  • Use Overall Actions to structure a meaningful plot
  • Write and deliver compelling plot twists scene by scene
  • Craft ensemble scripts with equally strong arcs for every character

WHAT DOES IT COVER?

Day 1: ACTION
During this Lab, we put Episodic Structure up on its feet. Learn how to:
  • Set up the theme through Action, not exposition
  • Deliver the theme through Overall Action and Relationship
  • Create Action that illuminates the inner life of the Characters

Day 2: JOURNEY

Continue the structural investigation of Episodics as we delve deeper into pace, rhythm and journey. Discover how to:
  • Build through a dramatic crisis using the actions of awareness, not conflict
  • Craft clear and compelling plot points, scene by scene
  • Create plot twists that advance the story, deepen the characters and transform the relationships

Day 3: MEANING

Put it all together! This is a crash course on profound structures that really sing.  Day 3 reveals how to:
  • Use Action to create a roller coaster ride through a truth
  • Craft a profound transformation for your characters and your audience
  • Write truly exciting, playable episodes that embody meaning

JILL SOLOWAY - WRITER/DIRECTOR: TRANSPARENT (GOLDEN GLOBE WINNER, EMMY AWARD WINNER) AFTERNOON DELIGHT (WINNER BEST DIRECTOR SUNDANCE 2013)

"Joan gave me a Technique, she handed me a map with clear markings that made sense… Although I had been writing TV for many years and went to film school in college, I had no actual technique. I had a shot list and a hope for the best, but I didn’t have something to do when I got to the set...I came into most of my power as a filmmaker when I realized that all I needed to do was make a safe space for people to have feelings."
